What it is, how claims work, and what your options are in California.
When a business, bank, insurer, or other organization cannot reach the owner of certain financial assets for a legally defined period, it may be required to report and transfer those assets to the State Controller's Office for safekeeping.
The state maintains records of the assets and provides a process for rightful owners or authorized representatives to submit claims. A listing does not guarantee that any particular person is eligible to receive the property. The state evaluates the evidence.
